revolut : e-sim

fintech #15

Before I went on my trip to Turkey (to have that Turkish ice cream from the ice cream man, ofc),  I used this app called Nomad to purchase an e-sim for 30 days with a 3GB plan for $9. Those days of fumbling with tiny plastic trays and the constant worry of losing your SIM card abroad are gone.

“Waittt!! You are wasting my time… - what does this have to do with fintech??”

A couple of weeks later, Revolut, one of Europe’s unicorn darlings, announced a launch into the e-sim category. (For those of you who do not know, Revolut is a fintech neo-bank and financial technology company—a fintech superapp if you will—that offers a range of products from banking services, currency exchange, debit and credit cards, virtual cards, Apple Pay, interest-bearing "vaults,"  personal loans, BNPL (where it has a banking licence), stock trading, crypto, and commodities.)

Revolut's eSIM is a digital marvel, embedded directly within your phone. Activating mobile data plans becomes a breeze - a few taps within the app and you're instantly connected to networks worldwide.

With Revolut's eSIM, you have complete control. Purchase data plans specifically tailored to your travel destination or region, ensuring you only pay for what you use. No more nasty surprises, just peace of mind and a budget that stays on track. (no paying over $100,000 like that man in America) [IT’S A TIKTOK LINK ]

You can keep your regular SIM card for calls and texts, and utilize the Revolut eSIM for blazing-fast data. This allows you to stay connected with loved ones back home while exploring new horizons, all without ever having to switch physical cards.

You can Top- up on the Go, where the Revolut eSIM data plan directly within the app, ensuring you never get disconnected in the middle of an important video call or while uploading that epic Instagram story.

Let’s bring in our buddy the “Thinker” to break it down:

  1. Open the Revolut App: Head to the "Lifestyle" section and tap on "eSIM."

  2. Plan Your Connection: Browse through the available data plans and choose the one that aligns perfectly with your travel needs and budget.

  3. Download and Activate: Once purchased, the eSIM downloads and activates directly on your phone. It's that simple!

Important Considerations:

  • Currently, Revolut's eSIM doesn't offer voice calls or SMS functionality. You'll need your regular SIM card for those.

  • eSIM services are available in select regions. Double-check the Revolut app to see if your travel destination is covered.
